If you don’t know, I am a huge fan of Madden. Since I was little, I grew up on Madden. So I was disappointed when Madden entered the dark ages of their series. I considered the dark ages of Madden between 2005-2011, after the purchase of the exclusive license of the NFL. Usually, during this time, Madden would release mediocre games every game. However, in 2008, EA Sports would release one decent game. It was Madden NFL 09. This was happened to be the first Madden I own on the next-gen consoles. I did play Madden NFL 07 on the PS3 but it was complete trash. So with this Madden, I wasn’t expecting anything good. After playing this game, I realized that this is one of the best Maddens of all time and so underrated because nobody talks about this Madden.
Madden 09 received a huge improvement in graphics, especially on player models. If they have used these models on the Madden 07, it would have a better appeal. This year also include a new commentary team of Tom Hammond and Cris Collinsworth. Their commentary is okay if you don’t mind Collinsworth. The field and weather effects look more realistic than last year.
The gameplay is similar to Madden NFL 08 except with few tweaks. The main tweak is the Adaptive Difficulty Engine. It changes the AI’s difficulty based how you play. For example, if you play great passing the football but horrible at running the ball, the AI difficulty will be on All-Madden for passing defense and Pro for running defense. Another thing I did miss on this Madden was Total Control Celebrations. It was so fun scoring with players like Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, and Randy Moss so you can do their famous celebrations. Also, you can choose if you want to celebrate on goal post or the stands.
The game modes are Franchise Mode, Mini-Games, Madden IQ, and Madden Moments. Franchise mode and Mini-Games are the same as the previous installments. Madden IQ is where you practice your Madden skills. Teaching you how to make the right moves for offense and defense then test your skills on the Madden Test. Madden Moments is back from Madden NFL 2005 but instead being moments from the last 15 years, it is from last season. It is fun reliving these moments by driving for the final score or making a huge comeback. My favorite game mode is Superstar mode because this is the most authentic career mode I’ve seen in Madden. In this mode, you complete in various combine drills such as the 40-yard dash, bench press, and other position-specific drills. These drills affect your overall and your draft stock. Also, you can hire your own agent and complete to the Hall of Fame. I miss this in Madden because now it’s boring due to most of the features were removed and it’s no draft. It doesn’t feel fun as it should be.
